Thirty Internet anniversary
Internet is part of our daily life, and this Friday, May 17, marks the thirty anniversary of the Internet. The foundations that we know today, and thanks to which we can obtain a great benefit from the internet, were elaborated by Tim Berners-Lee, in his report on the basic principles of the World Wide Web.
In this article I would like to talk about what the internet is today, about the data we have about one of the pillars of the current world. At the end of the day, the internet surrounds us at every moment, not only the computer or the mobile phone that we use to send an email or a whatsapp, but we already have smart wristbands, printers and even scales that work with the internet.
All the data that I am going to comment in this article have been obtained by the Toucan Toco company, specialized in the analysis and visualization of data.
At present there are 7.600 million people, almost 60% of that population, that is 4.388 million people, use the Internet, although we find that there is a certain inequality depending on the continents. Both in North America and in Northern Europe there is a penetration level of 95%, while in Central Africa that percentage only reaches up to 12% of the population. Some companies like Amazon or Facebook are working on changing this and on allowing the internet to reach the whole world.
When talking about connected devices according to Gartner, it was expected that by 2021 there will be more than 25,000 million. We must bear in mind that nowadays not only computers or mobile phones are connected to the internet, but thanks to the Internet of Things we can find cars, watches … practically anything can connect to the internet.
In the section of social networks Facebook is still the king, followed closely by YouTube. Globally there are more than 3,484 million different users. A scandalous figure the truth.
To finish this section I will talk about the data generated only in 2018, it will be enough for you to realize the magnitude of the internet. 33 zettabytes were generated in this period, the figure already seems great, but if we take into account that until 2015 the amount of data generated by man was “only” 8 zettabytes impresses a little more. This highlights the importance of data analytics, that ability to transform data into useful information for the company.
Internet at the national level
It’s time to talk about the situation in Spain in this 30th anniversary of the internet. In our country there are 43 million internet users, the population of Spain is almost 47 million inhabitants, more than 90%. In addition, 72% of the population between the ages of 16 and 74 uses the Internet on a daily basis.
The Spanish user spends more than 5 hours connected to the internet, surfing the net, watching Netflix, reading newspapers, and an hour and a half using social networks. That is, we spend more than 7 hours a day on the internet, in some cases it is more on the internet than sleeping.
In this thirtieth anniversary of the internet, I think it’s fundamental to talk about social networks. These are the “culprits” that Internet consumption has skyrocketed in recent years.
- Facebook: the social network par excellence this 2019 fifteen years of life. Currently it has more than 2,200 million active users per month and generates 4 petabytes of data per day. Every 60 seconds 1 million users log in to Facebook.
- Instagram: the social network that has suffered the most growth in recent years, and has managed to surpass the frontier of 1,000 million users.
- YouTube: it is the second social network in number of users, exceeding 1,500 million. Every minute that passes, 4.5 million videos are displayed.
What happens on the internet every minute?
The data that I am going to throw next are real, although in some cases they seem incredible. The data refers to what happens in different digital sites every minute:
An average of one million dollars per minute is spent on online purchases.
Nearly 400,000 apps are downloaded on average between Google Play and the App Store.
An average of 694,444 hours are viewed on Netflix.
An average of 188 million emails are sent through Gmail.
Almost 4 million searches are carried out on Google.
More than 40 million messages are sent on average between Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp.
What is the future of the internet?
After the thirty anniversary of the Internet it is normal to think about your future, what awaits you? The truth is that technological advances make a world without internet impossible and thanks to the IOT, not all the devices will be connected to the internet in a short period of time, in order to offer a better performance.
I would like to end this article by asking people, users, to be careful with the internet. We are not aware of how vulnerable we can become, and our whole life is there. So I always recommend to be careful with what is done and not done.
I hope this article about the 30th anniversary of the internet has seemed interesting to you and that you can learn about the amount of data we generate.
See you in the next article!
